While Shen Kuo was away, Shen Qiu and her brother Shen Dong encountered danger at midnight. Upon his return, he sought help from bear hunter Shen Dashan, but Shen Qiu suspected he might be the legendary man-faced bear. This cunning monster lured away the able-bodied men in a ruse, tricking the elderly and weak into the ancestral hall. Shen Qiu saw through the plot but found herself in peril. Shen Kuo engaged in a fierce battle, during which the bridge was destroyed and communication cut off. Shen Dong was abducted, and Shen Kuo went missing. Although the police shot dead one bear, they discovered there were still others of its kind in the mountains. As the mist lingered, the knocking sound echoed once again.
